5 Tips To Boost Your Gut Health

December 9, 2020 by Jessica Leave a Comment

If you have been following our blog for a while, you might have picked up on the fact that Wendy and I are huge advocates of a healthy gut. Today we are highlighting 5 simple and practical things you can do to improve your digestive health.

    1. Be a mindful and intuitive eater. Many of our patients don’t realize how much intuitive eating can aid in digestion. I’m sure we’ve all eaten too much and too quickly.  By practicing intuitive eating, you can make sure to honor your hunger, respect your fullness, and eat at a slow pace, which will help your digestive tract function more optimally.
    2. Increase your fiber intake. It’s recommended that women get 25 grams of fiber per day and men should aim for 38 grams. Foods rich in fiber include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and beans. Fiber aids in digestion and promotes regularity.
    3. Boost your probiotic intake. Simply put, there are an estimated 100 trillion microorganisms representing an excess of 500 species that live in your GI tract. Most of the bacteria in our gut help to keep harmful microorganisms (also known as pathogens) in check. They also help us to digest food, absorb nutrients, and help to boost our immune function. You can obtain probiotics from foods like Sauerkraut, Kefir, Yogurt, Kimchi, Miso Soup, Tempeh. You can also consider taking a probiotic supplement.  I actually recently started taking this probiotic and have been loving it so far (TMI: Bowel movements are on POINT). Probiotics are thought to be safe for most people, but we encourage you to ALWAYS speak with your doctor, dietitian, or pharmacist before starting any supplement regimen.
    4.  Eat prebiotic foods. We like to think of prebiotics as the food probiotics need to grow and thrive. Prebiotics are non-digestible components found in different foods. They work synergistically with probiotics to optimize gut function. Foods that will provide you with prebiotics include Leeks, Onions, Garlic, Scallions, Banana, Sweet Potato
    5. Drink more water. That’s right, water. It’s simple and free. But you’d be surprised at how many people don’t get enough H20 in their day. Water helps our digestive systems eliminate waste and ensure proper digestion. Many of our patients who are experiencing constipation find that just adding a few additional glasses of water into their daily regimen can bring relief to their occasional GI distress.

Let us know in the comments below what you do to help keep your gut happy and healthy!

    Easy Cheesy Spinach Frittata

    December 7, 2020 by Jessica 2 Comments

Sometimes I make this frittata for the week and don’t have to think too hard about what I’ll be having for breakfast. Very straight forward, flavorful, and hits the spot every ???????? single ???????? time. This is also a great way to incorporate veggies into your breakfast (is it just me or has it been a struggle eating enough fiber during this pandemic? I’ve been super backed up sometimes ????)

Anywho, the trick is to let most of the eggs cook on the stovetop and then finish it off by broiling for a few minutes! Recipe below ❤️

    Easy Cheesy Spinach Frittata
    Ingredients
    • 2 tablespoons oil for sautéing
    • 1 leek, white and light green parts only, roughly chopped or 1/2 onion, chopped
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • ½ teaspoon paprika
    • 2 cups spinach, chopped
    • 6 eggs, beaten
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 cup of Muenster or other cheese, diced or grated
    • Cracked black pepper for topping
    Instructions
    1. In a medium skillet, heat the oil and add the leeks and garlic. Sauté for a few minutes until leeks are translucent.

    2. Then add the paprika and spinach, and continue sautéing for another couple of minutes, until the spinach has wilted.

    3. In a bowl, whisk salt and cheese into eggs and add to the skillet.

    4. Cook over low-medium heat until the eggs have set around the edges, around 8-9 minutes. Turn on the broiler and broil for an additional 2-4 minutes until the top is browned and completely cooked.

    5. Allow to cool, slice, and enjoy with cracked black pepper, and fresh bread.

December 7, 2020 by Jessica Leave a Comment

Like pretty much everyone else, I’m listening to more podcasts these days because, you know, there’s a pandemic happening. I especially love listening to food podcasts while cooking. It helps to calm my stress and anxiety and makes cooking more enjoyable. I usually go with food-related podcasts when in the kitchen because it’s a great way to learn about new cooking methods and listen to people who—like me—live and breathe food.

With that in mind, here are eight of the podcasts I love to listen to while cooking. These podcasts touch on a range of topics, including but not limited to food itself, social justice, intuitive eating, wellness, body respect, and our broader culture. All of these podcasts are intentional about inclusivity and feature guests with a wide range of lived experiences. Get ready to up your cooking game while learning so much in the process.

    Crispy Pan-Fried Tofu

November 30, 2020 by Jessica Leave a Comment

Okay tofu skeptics, we have a recipe that may have you rethinking your tofu aversion.

This is one of my favorite ways to make tofu! Savory game on point thanks to soy sauce, nutritional yeast, & garlic. I’m a big fan of dusting the pressed tofu in corn starch, pan frying, and then adding sauces and spices.

Having quality non-stick pans will make frying the tofu SO MUCH easier.

    Print
    Crispy Pan-Fried Tofu
    Ingredients
    • 1/2 cup corn starch
    • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1 block 12oz extra firm tofu, drained and cut into ½-inch cubes
    • ¼ cup oil for frying
    • ½ teaspoon each turmeric thyme, ground cumin, and curry powder
    • 2 cloves garlic minced
    • ½ jalapeño deseeded and chopped
    • 2 tablespoons tamari
    • 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
    Instructions
    1. In a bowl, mix together the corn starch, pepper, and salt. Dust each tofu cube into the starch mix and set aside.
    2. Heat oil in a pan and sauté tofu over high heat for 6-8 minutes, until tofu is golden. Depending on the size of your pan, you may need to do this in multiple batches.
    3. Once crispy, add the spices and stir until tofu is uniformly yellow.

    4. Then add garlic, chili, tamari, and nutritional yeast. Sauté a little longer, until golden brown. Enjoy with your favorite grains and vegetables!
