19 POC-Owned Businesses That Sell Incredible Spices, Sauces, & Condiments

September 21, 2020 by Wendy Leave a Comment

People of color who want to start a business often face unique challenges, especially within the food space. The specific reasons why vary based on the community in question. When it comes to Black people, for instance, decades of systemic racism have made it incredibly difficult to build up the type of personal or generational wealth that can be so helpful when starting a business. Plenty of research suggests that having less money is associated with a lower likelihood of starting a business, partly because it’s easier to start a business when you have savings, and also because a larger amount of personal wealth helps you get bigger loans and negotiate better credit terms. Instead, Black entrepreneurs are more likely to rely on credit cards than business owners of any other race, which can make it tough to keep a business afloat year after year. COVID-19 has complicated things even more as service industries, including food services, are at a higher risk for disruption and these industries also have the highest share of POC-owned small businesses.

Continuously investing our dollars into POC-owned companies is vital to their survival and success. One great way to do that is by buying cooking products and ingredients. As devastating as COVID-19 has been, many of us have been spending more time in the kitchen. In case you want to support POC-owned businesses and up your cooking game with quality products at the same damn time, below is a roundup of 19 POC-owned businesses that sell incredible spices, sauces, and condiments. Instead of making a one-time purchase, consider regularly stocking your pantry with these items. Also keep in mind that due to the increased demand of Black-owned products in particular, some of these items may be sold out, on pre-order, or have delayed shipping. Please be considerate and patient when placing your orders, since businesses are trying to meet this increase in demand.

    Creamy Kale Pasta

    September 14, 2020 by Wendy 2 Comments

Glowing from the home concert mama Patti and Gladys gave last us night so dedicating this creamy kale pasta to them! To make this sauce, you literally throw everything into the blender, cook down for a few minutes, and toss with pasta. It’s SO flavorful and creamy, thanks to the secret ingredient, white beans ?

I live solo so don’t like making large batches of pasta.  With this sauce, I freeze half, and then use the other half to toss with fresh cooked pasta whenever I’m ready to enjoy. Recipe below ? Happy Monday!! -Wendy

    Black Eyed Pea Hummus

    September 12, 2020 by Wendy 4 Comments

If you’re looking for a simple and delicious appetizer or snack, look no further. We have a flavorful Black Eyed Pea Hummus spread. Black eyed peas are severely underrated and we are highlighting them in this savory dip.

Black eyed peas belong to the legume family. They are a great source of plant-based protein and fiber. Black eyed peas are a great source of thiamin, folate, iron, and phosphorous.

Black eyed peas were originally grown in West Africa and is a staple in many African dishes. They are often used in soups, salads, fritters, and casseroles. Aside from their delicious flavor, black eyed peas are also a staple in many African dishes because of their ability to survive in hot and dry climates. They have been known to survive through major droughts, making them highly accessible during tough times.

The spices in this hummus are going to give you life! We’ve talked about berbere before, but how many of you have heard/used it? Berbere is a bright red, chili-based spice. It is most often used in Ethiopian cuisine. Berbere typically includes red chilies similar to serranos, toasted ginger, cardamom, garlic, fenugreek and cinnamon. You can order the spice online, or if you happen to be in the DMV area, you can get it at a local Ethiopian market. We know it’s kinda hard to find, so you have the option of replacing with ground paprika or chili powder!

Let’s get started on this recipe. Add the peas to a food processor and pulse for a few seconds. Then add the garlic, tahini, berbere, lemon juice, salt, and 2 ice cubes, and continue pulsing for 3-4 minutes until you get a smooth, creamy texture and the ice is completely worked in.

The ice cubes will help to make the hummus creamier. Adjust for salt, as needed. Top with olive oil, toasted sesame seeds, and berbere for topping. You can also add fresh parsley for a finishing touch!

We love having hummus as a midday snack with pita chips or as a spread on breakfast toast. It’s SO easy to prepare, and can be stored for up to a week in the fridge. How many of you have tried black eyed peas in hummus? Drop us a comment below and let us know what you think!

Herb Roasted Potatoes w/ Feta & Furikake

September 10, 2020 by Wendy Leave a Comment

Felt a slight breeze and drop in temperature, which is my cue to start throwing all foods in the oven lol Here are some herb roasted baby potatoes with feta and furikake. Made this to enjoy for breakfast/lunch/dinner for the week. In the mornings I pair with a fried egg, and in the afternoons I’ll enjoy with fish or a tofu stir-fry.

For those of you not familiar with furikake, it’s a Japanese seasoning made with seaweed, sesame seeds, and salt. It pairs perfectly with rice, but I  add it literally anything savory. They now have it in Trader Joes, and you can also get on Amazon. If you don’t have any on hand, feel free to omit. Anyways, enjoy the recipe!
