5 Fun Ways to Hydrate That Aren’t Plain Old Water

July 14, 2021 by Wendy Leave a Comment

Tired of drinking water? There are other great ways to hydrate.

As important as hydration is for good health, relying on water as your primary fluid source can get quite boring. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found myself guzzling jars of water without really wanting to. It’s easy to go overboard in an attempt to hydrate, so you should assess what your unique fluid needs are. Eight cups a day should not be a blanket recommendation for everyone, and you’ll want to consider things like climate, physical activity, foods you’re eating and medical history. Checking urine color is a simple way to do a hydration check, with light to pale yellow urine indicating good hydration. If you’re constantly going to the bathroom and/or your urine is transparent, this is a sign you may want to cut back on fluids. If your urine is a deep yellow or brown, it’s time to up the hydration (keep in mind, though, that some vitamins and medications may impact urine color).

Looking for creative ways to up your fluid intake? Here are five things you can start doing today!Head on over to FOOD NETWORK to read the full article! 5 Fun Ways to Hydrate That Aren’t Plain Old Water

Should You Be Taking a Supplement?

July 9, 2021 by Wendy Leave a Comment

Just because it feels like everyone else is, doesn’t necessarily mean you should.

There are supplement ads left and right that claim to help with everything imaginable, from skincare to gut health. It can feel overwhelming and leave people feeling confused about whether or not supplements are necessary — and wondering which ones they should even consider taking.

    Do You Need a Supplement?

The answer is, it depends. Not everyone needs to take supplements, and it’s important to get a full medical evaluation with lab work to assess whether or not you could benefit from taking certain supplements. Taking supplements without enough information or professional guidance can result in unpleasant side effects and potential overdosing. Some supplements can also interfere with certain medications.

How to Eat Healthfully, Even When You’re Sick of Cooking

July 6, 2021 by Wendy Leave a Comment

Here’s what to do when you just can’t make another meal.

For many of us, the thrill of making sourdough starters and slow-roasted meals has been replaced with kitchen burnout. When the pandemic first hit, people were actively seeking ways to make food more exciting since so many of our favorite restaurants were forced to shut down. My social media feed was filled with impressive food photos and I felt the urge to try out recipes I had bookmarked years ago. It was all going great … until it wasn’t. I quickly became exhausted and noticed that other people were over it too. As chaotic as this past year has been, it’s important to find flexible ways to nourish ourselves and the good news is that there are ways to do this quickly and efficiently. Here are a few things that can help.

Make meals that involve minimal cooking.

You don’t need to turn on the stove every time you want a satisfying, nutritionally balanced meal. Aim for two to four different food groups per meal (think carbohydrates, proteins, fats, fiber) and include foods that require the least amount of kitchen labor. Shelf-stable items like canned tuna and beans are incredibly helpful for adding a boost of protein to meals. One of my favorite throw-together meals is mixed greens with chickpeas, boiled eggs, avocado and dressing. Other ideas include sliced bread with hummus and vegetables or quesadillas with black beans and cheese. All of these can be made in less than 10 minutes and cover different food groups. In the mornings, smoothies can be a quick, easy alternative for breakfast- just keep in mind that fruit blended with juice or water is not enough nutrition for one meal. Consider blending fruits with yogurt, seeds or nuts, and/or milk for increased satisfaction.

    Dominican Inspired Potato Salad

July 6, 2021 by Wendy Leave a Comment

What is your secret for bomb potato salad?! Potato salad is one of those comfort dishes I grew up eating and when my grandma would ask what I wanted her to make for me, this was always my first choice. This is prime potato salad season so here’s my super simple Dominican inspired potato salad recipe. I’m not a fan of adding too many ingredients and prefer to stick with the basics.

You can always customize based on your preferences and add spices, herbs, peppers and whatever else you love!  ????

    Print
    Dominican Inspired Potato Salad
    Ingredients
    • 2 lbs of russet potatoes peeled and chopped into 1/2" chunks
    • 3/4 lbs carrots peeled and chopped into 1/4" chunks
    • 3 large eggs
    • 1/2 small red onion finely chopped
    • 3/4 cup-1 cup mayonnaise depending on how dressed you want it
    • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • Chopped cilantro for garnishing
    Instructions
    1. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the potatoes, carrots and eggs and boil for 10 minutes or until potatoes are cooked.
    2. While that's happening, mix mayo, vinegar and salt in a small bowl.
    3. Also prepare an ice bath for the eggs. Once done cooking, add the eggs to the ice bath and let cool for 10 minutes before peeling and chopping.
    4. In a large bowl, add the onions, cooked potatoes, carrots, chopped eggs and scoop the mayo mix in. Toss together until potatoes are completely coated and garnish with chopped cilantro!
    5. Allow to cool in the fridge for an hour before serving
